Yan Smiley trained in costume design, costume making and textile artistry, she is originally from East Lothian and is currently based in Edinburgh but is available for work in Glasgow, Newcastle and London (UK). With her passion for costume, Yan initially studied a HND in Textile Design at Edinburgh College before attending the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh College of Art to study her BA (Hons) Degree in Performance Costume Design. Yan graduated in July 2017 with a First Class BA (Hons) Degree in Performance Costume Design and was awarded the JL Paterson Award, appointed to the highest achieving student of their discipline.

 

Yan predominantly blends historical cut with narrartive concepts in anatomy, sci-fi, technical instruments, architecture, folklore and nature with a keen focus on mental health. She enjoys designing for the mediums of ballet, contemporary ballet, opera and film.
