Lady Macbeth in 1610
"Fair is foul and foul is fair"
Assigned with a restricted colour palete of bold red, black and warm white as well as an individual time period of 1610 this project was a redesign of Yan's previous interptetation of Lady Macbeth as a selkie .
Yan took forward the idea of utilising grotesque and sexualised concepts and imagery from her original design work as decorational details in 17th century dress.
Anthropological studies revealed the colour symbolisation from this time period;
Black and White: Grief/hidden purity by this grief.
Red: Vengeance and cruelty.
Red and White: honesty and power.
With careful consideration for her interpretation of Lady Macbeth as a vulnerable and sick character in captivity, these colours and combinations were detailed. Research and development undergone into the dress, etiquette and adornment latterly informed the detail design, placement and cut to provide an unnatural form.
A beautiful, pained and vulgar image.
