Roy Lichtenstein

Dance Collaboration

This project was a collaboration between designer and dancer to create a performance inspired by the art of Roy Lichtenstein. Dancers choreographed and then performed pieces representing the concepts of the designers in December 2015 at the Scottish Gallery of Modern Art, in an exhibition of Lichtenstein's work.

In this project Yan explored the character of Roy Lichtenstein. Through study, Yan unveiled traits of ignorance, innocence and curiosity towards the female and her body. These said characteristics are often expressed in his work. The costumes embody this curious nature and through performance the audience is encouraged to engage in their own curiosity - while simultaneously realising his fascination with the human form. With reference to puppetry, robotics and Lichtenstein's graphic outlining, the figure is divided, disjointed, enlarged and multiplied- to create new manufactured figures. All of this is obscured by large fluid forms, with detailing inspired by his 'drowning girl' and natural landscapes. It is the the human emotion and depth he could never grasp.
